Childs Road, Mill Park

Consultation has concluded

In September and October 2018, we shared our proposed design of the Childs Road Upgrade and wanted to hear your feedback.

Thank you for taking the time to tell us your thoughts about our proposed design. You can find out more about what we heard below.

As part of the Childs Road Upgrade, we’ll:

  • add an extra lane in each direction between Beaumont Crescent and Prince of Wales Avenue

  • upgrade the roundabout with traffic lights at Bowman Drive

  • build a new bridge over Darebin Creek, and upgrade the existing bridge

  • build walking and cycling paths along the road

  • install safety barriers along the road.

Project benefits

The Childs Road Upgrade will:

  • improve traffic flow and travel times

  • provide an alternative route for eastwest travel that avoids the South Morang and Epping town centres

  • make it easier and safer for you to walk or cycle around your local area

  • lower the risk and severity of crashes with safety barriers.

As part of the upgrade, we plan to: add an extra lane in each direction between Beaumont Crescent and Prince of Wales Avenue upgrade the roundabout with traffic lights at Bowman Drive build a new bridge over Darebin Creek, and upgrade or replace the existing bridge build a walking and cycling path install safety barriers along the road.

What we heard about the Childs Road Upgrade

Thank you for taking the time to provide us with feedback on the proposed design of the Childs Road Upgrade. Your feedback has helped shape the final design scope of the road upgrade.

In September and October 2018, we shared our proposed design of the Childs Road Upgrade and received over 120 pieces of feedback from the community in the area. We then provided this feedback to the project team who used it to refine the proposed design.

During consultation, we heard the following themes are important to the community:

  • traffic congestion

  • local access

  • safety

  • the environment

Feedback we received during consultation has been used to update the proposed design of the Childs Road Upgrade. We’ll now upgrade the Dalton Road intersection to improve safety for those U-turning at Beaumont Crescent.

Next steps

The Childs Road Upgrade is part of the Northern Roads Upgrade, which will upgrade six key roads in the north. The Northern Roads Upgrade will be delivered as Public Private Partnership (PPP). This means we’ll engage a contractor through a competitive process to deliver the design and construction of the road upgrades.

We released a request for proposal (RFP) on 25 March 2019 to deliver 12 projects as part of the South Eastern and Northern Roads Upgrades. Construction will start from 2020.

What is the Suburban Roads Upgrade
The Northern Roads Upgrade is one of three packages in the Suburban Roads Upgrade. The Suburban Roads Upgrade is a $4 billion investment in the Northern, South-Eastern and Western suburbs to ease congestion, and to make it quicker, easier and safer for commuters to get to where they are going.
